Types of Video Microphones Available
Choosing a microphone suitable for video productions may seem daunting, but can be a straightforward decision when we consider the main type of content that we produce. Typically microphones will either be mounted onto our camera, stand remotely or work wirelessly through a recording device.
The most popular for general use are shotgun mics which are a type of single directional recording device. They can be mounted or pointed towards the sound source and have a ‘dead cat’ when recording outdoors. Our range includes directional shotguns for every budget and quality level.
Ambient or VR and spacial mics are omnidirectional and able to capture sounds from multiple sources, perfect for outdoors to give the impression of what it’s like to be there.
Lavalier or lapel mics work remotely or wirelessly and come in a range of options to suit production styles. Typically they are small and discreet, attaching to an item of clothing and will use a sound recorder to capture audio for subsequent editing. These are excellent for interviews, multi person recording and selfie recording when recording some distance from the camera.
Studio microphones are just that and intended to be used in a fixed place where the audio source is very nearby. These are far less portable than other options, but tend to capture high quality.
Many manufacturers offer complete kits or sets with everything needed to get started with professional quality sound straight out of the box. These are all typically compatible with any recent camera, whether mirrorless or DSLR.
Various recorders are also available which enable accurate, clear and high quality audio to be recorded and added onto the video at a later stage. These are favoured for the high quality which can be achieved. Wind shields are compatible with most mic models, with other accessories including items such as boom arms, headphones and more to support the growing number of customers who enjoy producing video content.
