Tripod plates are essential for securing a camera body onto a tripod head. The most popular methods of attachment are with a quick release plate, an L bracket or a standard plate. Various styles present different benefits for the photographer. For example an L bracket allows for extremely quick reframing in either portrait or landscape orientation. A quick release refers to a lever release system for quick dismounting, with some preferring a screw-type knob release. This is simply down to personal preference.
