Summary

Finished in nickel, this updated mark II 50mm f/1.5 II VM ASPH Nokton Vintage SC lens has been designed exclusively for Leica M cameras. With single coated optics results are more neutral with lower contrast than the equivalent multicoated lens. This favours black and white photography although the 50mm f/1.5 II VM ASPH SC can of course be used for colour work. With a classic focal width users can enjoy manual focus for a wide range of subjects from portraits and landscapes to a general all-day walk around option. This is furthered by the compact size and low weight at just over 200g for the Nickel finish version (which is one of six models available).

Features at a glance

  • 12-blade aperture for smooth bokeh when wide open
  • Designed for Leica rangefinders with classic nickel styling and image results
  • Single coated optics provide less high contrast, natural images favouring black and white
  • Well damped focus ring enables user to capture extremely sharp images
  • Compact and lightweight option with small 43mm filter thread

Photographers who enjoy being immersed in the experience of making images will particularly enjoy using Voigtlander lenses (we are fans ourselves). Not only do they look the part but also provide excellent focus feedback thanks to the use of specific lubricants in the focus mechanism. The double sided aspherical element also renders photographs extremely well, contributing to the satisfaction when using the 50mm f/1.5 II VM.

Voigtlander Lens Coatings and Design Variations

Voigtlander M system lenses are designed with two different optical coatings, which are referred to as ‘SC’ and ‘MC’. This stands for single coat and multi coating. With the case of the mark II 50mm f/1.5 VM it also happens to be available in three exterior colour styles, black, silver and nickel finish. This gives us six options to choose from depending on which type of images and movies we tend to enjoy making combined with which style of lens barrel suits our camera.

In general terms single coat may be preferable for monochrome or black and white images. Mid tones are the focus for single coated optics, with subtle graduated tones and slightly less contrast which they produce. This gives the photographer a more neutral starting point for post processing, or can be simply enjoyed for the unique style of image they produce.

Conversely multicoated lenses render beautiful rich natural colours, which some users find favours their colour work. Contrast levels are slightly higher providing more hues as we might find on certain film types.
