Voigtlander 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar Aspherical Lens For Sony E Summary
When a manufacturer with over 250 years of experience like Voigtländer claim a lens is their best performing 35mm E-Mount lens ever, it is time to pay attention! That is the case with the Voigtlander 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar Aspherical Lens for full frame Sony E-Mount cameras and here’s why.
The new model renders the highest resolution and best colour correction of all Voigtländer wide-angle E-Mount lenses. As their best performing slightly wide angle lens ever, the new 35mm APO-Lanthar continues along the lines of the high performance and much lauded 50mm f2 APO-Lanthar E-Mount lens.
The 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar design includes apochromatic colour correction, floating lens elements for better close focusing performance, two double sided aspherical elements, five abnormal partial dispersion elements and superior multi-coating for outstanding flare control. Optical performance is simply extraordinary when mounted on even the highest resolution Sony cameras. In-body stabilisation will compensate for camera shake thanks to full communication with any newer Sony body.
Key features
- Voigtländer’s best performing wide angle for Sony cameras
- Beautiful rounded bokeh rendition
- Pin sharp details from advanced optics including two ASPH elements
- Compact and lightweight at just 252 g
- Compatible with focus assist, EXIF and other camera data
The 35mm APO-Lanthar is fairly similar in size to the 50mm APO-Lanthar E. The manual focus APO-Lanthar E mount lens is chipped for full interface with Sony full frame or APSC cameras, providing EXIF data, focus assist, auto lens correction and 5-Axis Image Stabilisation (on supported cameras). Videographers benefit from a selective aperture which allows optional clickless video operation.
The lens is manual-focus only adopting an all-metal helicoid unit which has been assembled with high precision, high quality grease for a smooth even torque.

Our Verdict
The release of 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar ASPH Lens for Sony E-Mount opens up a new chapter for Voigtlander lenses. It’s not everyday we hear a manufacturer describing a lens as their best ever wide angle model for a camera system. If their previous similar claim regarding the 65mm f/2 Macro Apo-lanthar Aspherical Lens is anything to go by we can see some dedicated users picking up the new 35mm in a snap. This prime is perhaps more versatile with a tried and tested slightly wide focal width suitable for universal shooting as well as numerous subjects such as portrait and travel.
Sony users have been known to shoot video as well as stills and the 35mm f/2 Apo-Lanthar has a clickless aperture setting specifically for videographers. With smooth out of focus bokeh areas, ultra sharp and high resolving detail with excellent colour rendition, this really is a lens for all occasions. Manual focussing can create a challenge for newcomers used to effective Sony AF systems, however this lens supports focus assist and stabilisation to aid the user. Manual focus quickly becomes second nature if you stick with it, (check our blog post discussing manual focus lenses and why you should try them). If you love an immersive old school photography experience with outstanding and very satisfying results, this could be the lens for you.
