Panasonic Lumix S5 Summary
The new full-frame Panasonic Lumix S5 blurs the line between enthusiast and professional equipment, delivering advanced technologies normally associated with a pro-level hybrid camera. It is the latest model to join the growing range of full-frame L-mount Lumix bodies which are renowned for their combined video and stills capabilities. The S5 is considerably smaller and lighter than the S1H body, despite sharing the same 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with 24.2 megapixel resolution. The S5 is also capable of recording 4K 60p/50p 4:2:0 10-bit, and 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit internal movies with 14+ stops of dynamic range (using V-Log). This competes with pro cinema cameras whilst also providing V-Gamut compatibility with popular VariCam colour science renowned for accurate colours and skin tones.
Videographers also gain advanced low light capabilities with a maximum ISO 51,200 providing crystal-clear high sensitivity video with the adoption of Dual Native ISO technology. Stills photographers who never want to miss a moment can burst to 30fps in 6K photo mode with 18-megapixel equivalent photos, ensuring every moment of action is captured. Ultra-high resolution stills are also possible with 96 megapixel equivalent images when used on a tripod, broadening the appeal of the Lumix S5 to landscape, architectural and photographers who print large images.
Other Lumix S5 highlight features:
- Dual SD memory card slots including one high speed UHS-II video class
- Built-in body stabilisation providing up to 5-stops of compensation with OIS lenses
- Free-angle 3.0-inch LCD for selfies and Youtube vlogging plus a bright OLED EVF
- Significantly improved AF with deep learning Face, Eye, Body and Animal tracking
- New high capacity 2,200mAh battery for extended shooting times
- Weather sealed magnesium alloy die-cast body for reliable use anywhere
- Filmmaker connectivity through mini HDMI, mic input and headphone terminal
- Excellent connectivity with 5GHz WiFi and Bluetooth® v4.2
- Tethered shooting from a computer as well as smartphone camera control
- Panasonic provides regular firmware updates to enhance camera features

Our Verdict
Panasonic appears driven to provide content creators with extremely compelling new full-frame options with their hybrid camera line-up. The latest Lumix S5 model adopts and improves on existing technologies from the L-mount range, blurring the line between their top of the line professional and enthusiast-level models. The S5 will appeal to videographers, Youtubers and stills photographers who create content in virtually any genre, by delivering advanced features across both video and photography disciplines. The ability to record at 4K 30p/25p 4:2:2 10-bit provides access to professional movie making in-camera, with yet more advanced capabilities when using an external video recorder. Stills photographers who shoot sports or action gain breath-taking 60fps in 4K or 30fps in 6K mode, more than ample for even the most demanding subjects. Ultra-high resolutions are also possible with sensor-shift technology opening up stunning results suitable for art and landscape photographers.
Panasonic has also listened to customers and further improved their advanced deep-learning Ai algorithms to capture and track subjects in the blink of an eye. This includes Eye AF, together with face and animal detect features. Adding a free-angle high resolution LCD, powerful EVF and improved battery capacity serve to cement the S5 as a viable choice for an even wider range of users. With the broad selection of high quality L-mount lenses also from Sigma and Leica, the S5 is worthy for those who demand hybrid capabilities within an extremely compact full-frame mirrorless camera body. The body is also available with a 20-60mm lens kit and vlogging kit (which includes a tripod grip and spare battery).
