Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80 in detail |
Features in Detail The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80 is ‘micro four thirds camera' with a micro four thirds sensor and utilising micro four thirds lenses. Featuring 4K video and 4K photo as well as 5-axis dual image stabilisation and a splash and dustproof design, the G80 is the successor to the Panasonic DMC-G7. 4K Video The latest form of ultra-high definition video, 4K video offers a supreme and more immersive viewing experience than 1080 HD video. With a resolution four times larger than Full HD, at 3840 x 2160 the G80 delivers far higher levels of details. whatever format you're viewing the video in, recording it in 4K video will result in a crisper and higher definition video than even Full HD. 4K Photo If you've ever been filming a video and thought you've missed a great photographic moment, you'll love 4K photo. Filmed at 30 fps, 4K video allows you to extract a high definition still image from a moving image file, meaning you'll never miss that perfect moment again. 4K Burst mode The wonder of 4K means the G80 will record 60 4K photos in two seconds, 30 before the shutter is pressed and 30 after, meaning that you'll never ‘just miss' that moment again. High Speed Auto-focusing with DFD Technology The G80 features contrast autofocus and Panasonic's DFD (Depth from Defocus) which automatically calculates the distance between items in the frame and focuses in one fast, continuous movement. This not only helps with photo focusing but also provides a much smoother and stable focusing when shooting video. OLED Live View Finder The G80 features a large 0.74x 2,360k-dot high resolution OLED live view finder with Eyepoint of 20mm to deliver perfect framing under all conditions. The Live View Finder also shows all your settings right in front of your eye, allowing for perfect composition every time. The tilt and swivel touch-display also gives you the freedom to shoot from a variety of angles and positions. Stable Shooting Delivering silent shooting, the G80 features an electromagnetic shutter unit for reduced shutter shock, an improvement over the G7, and advanced 5-axis dual image stabilisation with 5-stop compensation. Where the G80 benefits over a DSLR is its ability to shoot quietly where a DSLR would have a shutter bouncing up and down. These combinations allow for stable shooting under a variety of conditions, opening the G80 up to a new range of photographers and photographic situations. Focus Stacking and Post Focus Formerly the reserve of high end DSLRs or advanced photographers, focus stacking and post focus will shoot a number of images at the same time at slightly varying focal ranges. The camera will then combine these into a siangle image, offering unique images that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Built-in WiFi The G80 can be controlled with the 'Panasonic image App' on your smartphone or tablet, allowing you to focus an image, release the shutter and view the image from a distance, and review your images on the larger screen of your smartphone or tablet and share on social networks. Easy Sharing Share your images easily with ‘drag-and-drop' onto social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Flickr using on your smartphone or tablet. Geotagging The G80 uses the GPS log or tag of your smartphone or tablet to know exactly where it is and will geotag your images accordingly, automatically attaching the information about where the image was taken to the image itself. |

Our Verdict
The Panasonic G80 is an addition to the range and sits between the G7 and GH4, boasting a number of headline features. The G80 uses the same 16MP Digital Live MOS Sensor as the GX80 but now does without a low pass filter and will shoot at 9fps for over 200 jpegs, a notable improvement over the G7's 7fps.
For the first time in a Panasonic camera, the G80 features an Eco Mode which will put the camera to sleep when it's not in use to conserve energy, extending the battery life for up to 900 shots on one charge.
Further advancements come in the form of advanced 5-axis Dual I.S. Image Stabilisation with 5-stop compensation and an electromagnetic shutter unit for shutter shock reduction. This is all combined with the new splash and dustproof design, large 0.74x 2,360k-dot OLED live viewfinder and a new focus stacking feature that builds on the existing Post Focus technology to allow users to fine-select the focus point in an image after it's been taken or combine multiple images with multiple focuses together with Focus Stacking.
With 4K video, post focus and focus stacking, the splash and dustproof design and advanced image stabilisation, the G80 opens up new ways of photographing and delivers impressive images with high-resolution and real-to-life details.
