Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens Summary

The rapid growth in the VR market has spurred Canon to release their first stereoscopic VR lens for full frame RF mount cameras in the form of this Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens. The clever design incorporates two lenses, which capture one single image simultaneously. This reduces several potential issues with 180º VR content creation, including lens synchronisation and image alignment.

The lens offers a simple and efficient way for VR content creators and professional production companies to produce high resolution virtual reality (3D) 180° VR content with greater levels of realism and immersion, thanks to Canon’s EOS VR Utility software and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro.

  • Efficient and simple workflow with EOS VR Utility plugin
  • High quality image capture for full frame mirrorless cameras
  • Bright f/2.8 aperture

Canon’s new EOS VR Utility

The new EOS VR Utility aims to significantly reduce the workload and streamline VR 3D production times. Conversion of stereoscopic footage and stills images for editing and playback, will become a much more efficient process.

Equirectangular conversion

In order to properly experience 180° VR footage or still image through a VR headset, the order of the left and right eye images must be switched and an equirectangular conversion of the two circular fisheye images must be performed. This equirectangular conversion requires the use of Canon’s EOS VR Utility and effectively ‘de-squeezes’ the two circular fisheye images into two side-by-side ‘square’ images (a standard format for 180° VR image files), ready for viewing on a VR headset or editing in a compatible software application or NLE system. A checkbox in the EOS VR Utility allows users to toggle between the converted and non-converted views.

Editing

The utility allows for basic editing, review and playback the movie file, while marking the desired in and out points for export.

Multiple export options

Movie files can be exported into various resolutions and professional codecs, including DPX and ProRes files, ready for editing and grading in a compatible NLE application such as Adobe Premiere Pro. Still images are exported as JPEGs.

Premiere Pro

Adobe’s Premiere Pro is the industry leading application for creating rich, immersive VR content. Canon’s EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to automatically perform the equirectangular conversion while seamlessly importing your Canon VR files in one simple step. The converted files can then be simply added to your timeline and edited and graded in the usual way, ready for final export and distribution.

Subscription

All users can enjoy a free trial period and perform conversions of still images and videos shorter than two minutes. However, when exporting videos of two minutes or longer with EOS VR Utility, or importing with EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro, a paid for subscription is required. By subscribing to the EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro subscription service, you can unlock the more advanced and professional features of the applications, such as:

  • Conversion of movie clips longer than two minutes
  • High-quality DPX/Pro Res movie exports

Looking to sell your Used Canon RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye VR lens?

Our Verdict

To cater for the rapid growth in VR technology Canon has launched its first stereoscopic VR lens for full frame RF mount cameras with this RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens. The EOS R system is perfect for VR projects with high resolution full frame cameras like the EOS R5 available, remote shooting using Canon’s EOS utility and a new EOS VR Utility to make basic edits to twin lens files. The beauty of having two lenses captured onto one image is that it removes any potential issues from image alignment or lens synchronisation issues. Precisely the same moment is recorded in 180° resulting in one single file.
As we would expect the lenses themselves are typically high quality with L-series build, bright f/2.8 apertures and result in sharp, high contrast images, with reduced ghosting and flare thanks to Canon’s UD elements and SWC coatings. 2 x UD elements are also included in the formula with 12 elements. Despite what this twin lens can capture it is extremely compact and weighs just 350g so you can use it in all sorts of VR recording situations without a cumbersome lens in tow. If you are involved in creating VR content and have, or have your eye on the EOS R system this could well be the deciding factor.
