Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III Macro VXD Lens for Nikon Z Summary

First developed in 1979, Tamron’s 90mm macro lens lineup has a rich history, and the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III Macro VXD Lens for Nikon Z continues that legacy for mirrorless photographers. This portable full-frame (FE) macro lens offers life-sized 1:1 magnification and features Tamron’s first ever 12-blade circular aperture, which renders beautiful bokeh and unique starbursts from point light sources.

The advanced optical design resolves fine details across the entire frame, which Tamron has achieved through the inclusion of Low Dispersion elements. These enhance flat-field resolution, making it a great choice for digitising artwork, documents, and product packaging.

Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III Macro VXD Lens for Nikon Z in More Detail

Next generation macro performance

Tamron’s legacy of macro lenses dates back to 1979 with the release of their first SP 90mm F/2.5. Over the years, new models have garnered praise from photographers for their distinct bokeh and high image quality. The SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD launched in 2016 for DSLRs, which introduced modern improvements better suited for digital cameras.

Fast forward to 2024, and Tamron introduces its first mirrorless 90mm macro lens, bringing cutting-edge technology while continuing an esteemed tradition.

Image quality that builds on a legacy

With a history of being widely celebrated, Tamron 90mm macro lenses offer high resolution, coupled with beautiful bokeh. The 90mm f/2.8 Di III Macro VXD Lens for Nikon Z mount (Model F072) builds on this tradition with unparalleled resolution from the centre to the edges of the frame. It also delivers soft, blurry bokeh and a 3Dl effect that highlights your subject, making it stand out in the composition.

The lens features an advanced optical design with 15 elements in 12 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) elements that reduce light dispersion and effectively correct both spherical and chromatic aberrations.

Tamron’s BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating reduces ghosting and flare, even in challenging backlit scenarios, allowing for precise, clear images in all sorts of lighting conditions. A high-quality construction with short telephoto focal range makes it versatile for macro, portrait, tabletop, and long-distance photography.

When mounted on APS-C cameras like the Z 50 or Z fc the lens delivers a 135mm equivalent focal length, maintaining the f/2.8 aperture for stunning close-up shots on full-frame and crop format bodies.

Outstanding flat-field performance

Tamron’s 90mm f/2.8 Macro lens is designed with superior flat-field performance, making it ideal for digitising documents, artwork and packaging. Its high optical correction ensures exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and uniform illumination with minimal vignetting, even in close-up shots where depth of field is too shallow to compensate for peripheral softness.

The lens is also carefully designed to minimise distortion, delivering crisp, detailed images with balanced sharpness across the frame, making it perfect for those who need precision in flat-subject photography.

12-blade circular aperture

This lens introduces Tamron’s first ever 12-blade circular aperture, which creates beautifully rounded bokeh at wide open apertures, particularly in the macro range between 1:1 and 1:4 magnification.

The 90mm lens also reduces vignetting effectively, keeping bokeh smooth and circular across the frame. In addition to its bokeh performance, the 12-blade design creates stunning 12-ray starburst effects when the aperture is stopped down, which is ideal for embellishing dramatic scenes with point light sources like cityscapes or candle-lit settings.

Portable size and weight

Being both compact and lightweight, and measuring just 126.5mm long and 79.2mm in diameter, the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro easily fits into the palm of your hand. It weighs only 630g, so is easy to carry for extended shooting sessions, making it ideal for everyday use and when hiking to photo destinations.

It also comes with a newly designed lens hood that includes a sliding window, which allows for easy rotation of filters like polarisers or neutral density filters without needing to remove the hood. This design ensures smooth adjustments and helps maintain an uninterrupted flow, to enhance the overall user experience.

High performance focus system

Although not known for offering high speed AF performance, this 90mm macro lens includes a Voice-Coil Extreme-Torque Drive, Tamron’s VXD system. This does deliver fast and precise focusing on near and far objects, with a quiet focus motor that responds quickly. Additionally, a Focus limiter switch lets you limit the focus distance when a subject remains a static distance from the lens, reducing AF hunting and speeding up subject acquisition.

When manual focusing the lens features precise torque for accurate MF operation, allowing fine-tuning and precise focus with pinpoint accuracy.

tamron-90mm-macro-mirrorless-03

Customisation and usability

You can customise the lens and update firmware via Tamron’s proprietary software tool, and a  Focus Set Button is available to customise according to your chosen camera functions. The lens also includes a compact 67mm filter thread, which is the same as most other Tamron lenses, allowing for filter and accessory sharing between models.

Lastly it’s worth noting that the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di III Macro VXD Lens has a moisture-resistant construction and a Fluorine Coating to help reduce maintenance and keep debris from the front lens element.
