Tamron 28-300mm f/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD Lens for Sony E in More Detail
Wide to telephoto 10.7x zoom lens
The most noteworthy feature of the 28-300mm f/4-7.1 VC lens is its impressive 10.7x zoom range. Tamron users have stated that 200mm often falls short for an all-in-one zoom lens, and Tamron has answered by extending the focal length of this lens to 300mm.
Despite this extended range, the zoom lens remains exceptionally portable with a highly compact design, covering all shooting situations from everyday moments to travel, landscapes, snapshots, portraits, and even sports photography. This makes for an incredibly versatile option, which is perfect for capturing virtually any subject in any situation without needing to switch lenses.
Outstanding image performance
Enjoy excellent results thanks to an optical construction composed of 20 elements in 13 groups, including one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens element and an LD (Low Dispersion) element. These effectively control chromatic aberrations and maintain image quality throughout the range.
Tamron’s BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating also helps to suppress ghosting and flare, ensuring clear images even in backlit shooting conditions. As an all-in-one zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless Alpha cameras, this potentially offers best-in-class image quality.
Compact and lightweight design
Despite an impressive 10.7x zoom range from 28mm to 300mm, the lens remains extremely compact, measuring just 126mm in length and weighing only 610g. Its compact, versatile design makes it easy to carry anywhere, which is perfect for those who prefer bring less hear and a smaller camera bag.
The lightweight build also ensures users can shoot for longer periods without fatigue, while helping to frame shots more accurately for both stills and video.
Features Tamron’s VXD linear motor focus mechanism
The 28-300mm f/4-7.1 VC lens features Tamron’s renowned VXD autofocus drive, incorporating a premium linear motor focus mechanism for fast and precise focusing across the entire 10.7x zoom range. Unlike the common perception of all-in-one zoom lenses having slow autofocus, this model is able to deliver nimble performance, allowing users to capture fleeting moments. Quiet operation makes it perfect for both photography and videography, especially in situations where silence is essential, such as during events, while capturing street shots or similar situations.
Proprietary VC Mechanism
Included alongside Tamron’s proprietary VXD is the VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism. This helps to ensure steady shots, and is particularly beneficial at the 300mm telephoto end of the 10.7x zoom range. VC effectively minimises camera shake, which is common when shooting in the telephoto range, or during low-light conditions, and allows users to capture sharp photos without the need for a tripod.
User-friendly design
A number of features combine to provide a user-friendly and versatile lens, including:
- Tamron Lens Utility for lens function customisation and firmware updates
- 67mm filter size, which is the same as most other Tamron lenses for mirrorless cameras
- Customisable Focus Set Button for assigning functions
- Enhanced design for a more user-friendly experience
- Zoom Lock mechanism
- Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating
- Compatible with Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF

Our Verdict
Tamron has managed to pack all of their premium technologies into a versatile 10.7x wide to telephoto zoom lens for full-frame cameras, which weighs just 610g. This is ideal whether you capture landscapes, portraits, or travel photography, providing an excellent all-in-one option that is portable, lightweight, and offers a full suite of features.
Among the most useful are the 28-300mm zoom range, which is versatile enough for almost any subject, and is backed by an optical design that delivers high image quality throughout the range. Tamron’s proprietary VC and VXD technologies help to maintain image quality by reducing camera shake, while also ensuring that the lens keeps pace with Sony’s high-performance AF system.
