Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD Lens for Canon RF Mount in More Detail
Fast Aperture Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens
The Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 (equivalent to 17.6-32mm on full-frame) is a Canon mirrorless lens, which is designed for landscapes and architecture with the unique perspectives captured by ultra-wide angles. Its focal range also makes it ideal for indoor group portraits and real estate photography, which are subjects that take full advantage of its wide field of view.
At the longer end of the zoom range, the lens is suited to everyday snapshots, street photography and as a general purpose lens, offering a natural perspective close to the human eye’s perspective. Its fast f/2.8 aperture adds creative opportunities, producing beautifully soft bokeh for a range of subjects including environmental portraits and subject-driven shots.
Compact and Lightweight Design
Built for APS-C mirrorless cameras, the 11-20mm f/2.8 combines high performance with portability. Measuring just 84.2mm long and weighing only 340g, it’s a versatile choice for photographers who need lightweight gear. The compact design is comfortable for handheld shooting and ideal for video creators who use a gimbal or compact tripod.
The Canon RF mount version features an AF/MF switch for additional focusing control, along with a Connector Port that allows users to update firmware via Tamron’s Lens Utility™ software.
Adding to the experience is a compact 67mm front thread for adding affordable lens filters such as a polariser or UV filter, along with a variable ND filter for recording video and making long exposure images.
Exceptional Optical Performance
The 11-20mm f/2.8 lens delivers impressive image quality through its advanced optical design, which consists of 12 elements in 10 groups. This includes two GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) elements for sharpness across the frame, as well as one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and two LD (Low Dispersion) elements to effectively minimise chromatic aberrations.
To further enhance image clarity, Tamron has applied the BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating, which reduces ghosting and flare, ensuring faithful colour reproduction and contrast, even in backlit or challenging lighting conditions.
Impressive close-up shooting
The Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 offers excellent close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of just 0.15m at 11mm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4. This allows for ultra-wide macro-style photography, where subjects can be dramatically highlighted against blurred backgrounds. Whether capturing close-up details or experimenting with a shallow depth-of-field, this lens expands on what you can achieve with an ultra-wide zoom.
High-Performance AF for Stills and Video
The Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 lens is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent Drive) motor, which is proven to deliver precise and responsive autofocus performance. Capable of tracking moving subjects accurately, it’s perfect for both stills photography and video recording.
The quiet stepping motor provides smooth and near-silent operation, making it an excellent choice for situations where discretion is key, such as during video shoots or in quiet environments.
