Wide And Fast AF system
A 79-point phase-detection AF system (including 15 cross points) has points widely placed within the most frequently used central area of the frame. It keeps tracking and fast autofocusing on a moving subject.
Face Detection and Eye AF
Face Detection with Face Registration can detect up to eight faces in a scene, and adjust exposure, white balance, flash and other settings for beautiful portraits. Eye AF further assures sharp focusing on the face by detecting an eye to focus on.
Sophisticated AF algorithm in tracking
High performance in tracking moving subjects to enable continuous autofocus even during continuous shooting at 8fps.
AF Area modes
For autofocusing, you can choose among Wide, Zone, Center, Flexible Spot, Expand Flexible Spot and Lock-on AF area mode, which allows precise focus tracking of a subject by optimising target frame size and ensuring use of the optimal AF point.
Full-time Continuous AF during Full HD movie shooting
Records with superior speed and precision of full-time continuous phase-detection autofocusing, even during Full HD movie shooting, thanks to proprietary Translucent Mirror Technology.
24.2 MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor
The large Exmor CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.2 MP boosts sensitivity and reduces noise with gapless on-chip lens design eliminating the gaps between micro-lenses to collect more light.
In-body image stabilisation
Effective image stabilisation for any compatible lens, throughout the entire focal length range. Helps stabilise the viewfinder image while the shutter button is halfway pressed.
BIONZ X image processing engine
The processor handles enormous amounts of sensor data to allow high-speed shooting of superb low-noise images. Advanced built-in features include detail reproduction technology to produce more realistic images, diffraction-reduction to correct blurred details, and area-specific noise reduction for clearer, more finely detailed images even at high ISO settings. Area-specific Noise Reduction selectively divides the image into areas based on patterns (such as edges, textures and evenly coloured-areas like blue skies), then applies the most appropriate noise reduction for each area.
Top Display Panel
This "must have" feature of this midrange camera facilitates quick, easy setting and confirmation, especially with a tripod setup.
Customisable function buttons
Assign frequently used functions to the customisable buttons of your choice. Easily reassign 11 buttons to activate any of 49 functions for faster, more intuitive operation.
Color tabs in setting menu
Each tab in setting MENU has a color on the tab for an intuitive operation.
Supports 50Mbps XAVC S format
For extremely high image quality and minimal noise, record movies in the high-bit-rate XAVC S 2 format, which enables Full HD image recording at 50Mbps (60p/50p7, 30p/25p7, 24p).
Tiltable LCD screen
Tiltable LCD screen (2.7-type) to clearly shoot at max.135 degrees up and 55 degrees down, enables shooting over the heads of people in crowds, or on the ground for a startling view of pets and flowers. Brightness is adjustable.
OLED Tru-Finder with 100% frame coverage
OLED advantages of tonal gradation, colour reproduction and contrast, this electronic viewfinder makes it easy to view true-to-life images. It also lets you compare different effects of setting changes, as well as use MF Assist and a Preview function to fine-tune focus and preview shots, including those with defocusing effects.
Imaging Edge™ Viewer and Edit
Elevate your photography with Imaging Edge desktop applications. Use "Viewer" to quickly preview, rate, and select photos from large image libraries; and "Edit" to develop RAW data into high-quality photos for delivery. Get the best from Sony RAW files, and manage your productions more efficiently.
Wide max. ISO 100-25600 sensitivity range
The wide maximum sensitivity ranges of ISO 100-25600 for stills and ISO 100-12800 for movies let you shoot natural-looking, low-noise results even in low light
Creative movie function
There's more to auto and manual operation than meets the eye. AF functions are ever-reliable, and P/A/S/M exposure modes offer great creative control. Audio level display and rec level control on viewfinder/LCD screen make microphone/recording levels easy to screen and adjust while shooting. Fine-tune images by choosing among 20 Picture Effect and 13 Creative Style settings.
Control Wheel
The control wheel on back is popular among a7 series camera users, and you can modify its functionality according to shooting intention for quick changes of camera settings as you look at the viewfinder.
Multi Interface Shoe and Multi Terminal
The Multi Interface Shoe lets you mount wide-ranging accessories including a high-capacity flash unit a video light or shotgun microphone for enhanced movie shooting and more.

Our Verdict
Sony have been the camera industry's trailblazer's of late, and with the Sony a68 DSLR they are displaying that their SLR game is as strong as their mirrorless and compact game. The a68 packs a 24-Megapixel APS-C sensor, offering 4D focus, full HD video recording and a tiltable OLED LCD screen - and is fully compatible with the vast range of existing A-mount lenses.
It's been heavily touted, but what is 4D Focus? Well, Sony's innovative focusing system operates using area and depth in combination with time to predict the subject's movements. One key feature being it will not be distracted by new subjects coming into shot, it is intelligent enough to keep tracking what you want to be. The technology also allows for greater low light operation, and is stated to focus in EV-2 lighting.
As with the most recent Sony DSLRs this camera is actually an SLT (Single Lens Translucent), which uses translucent mirrors to enable faster autofocus as the mirror is remaining in place - saving precious milliseconds! This is the perfect camera for those looking to take the step up to SLR photography, with the right amount of features to get the best possible image quality - and with the ease of use to welcome you gently into a more complex world of picture taking.
For added convenience the Sony a68 with 18-55mm lens kit is also available for those looking for a perfect starter kit.
