Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E mount in More DetailPremium Compact Prime
Sigma lenses are being released with a new optical design made for the premium Contemporary line-up with impressive results alongside excellent build quality and user friendly ergonomics. Sigma has combined a refined new optical design in the 90mm f/2.8 DG DN, which results in one of the lightest and most compact Sony lenses at this focal width, without sacrificing quality.
New Contemporary line optical performance
The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens will resolve excellent detail whichever Alpha camera you have, including the Sony A7 IVA, the current high resolution king. Optical technology includes five SLD glass elements which reduce axial chromatic aberration that cannot be corrected in-camera. Beautiful bokeh is rendered by a glass moulded aspherical lens which also draws on camera corrections to ensure consistency with excellent results.
The lens offers further versatility for tele-macro shooting of close-up images thanks to a minimum focusing distance of 50cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.
An internal AF system with high-speed stepping motor is fast and quiet, making full use of Sony’s advanced AF technologies, also making a great option for videography well suited to weddings and portrait content creation.

An all-metal exterior with precision-cut aluminium parts deliver excellent build quality with an enjoyable user experience. Internal metal parts are also used for added durability, with enviable ‘made in Japan’ quality showing in a sleek exterior design. The compact nature of the lens extends to the cost effective 55mm filter thread, which is shared with the 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary and 24mm F3.5 DG DN Contemporary making for an excellent trio of prime options, particularly for film makers who switch filters.

Our Verdict
90mm is a popular focal width for photographers and videographers shooting a range of subjects, but in particular portraits, weddings and events. Sigma’s latest offering in this range is the 90mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary, which offers users an enticing combination of compact size and weight with superb optical results. The lens comes with the latest optical design resulting in sharp images and videos together with a bright 9-bladed f/2.8 aperture. This allows you to capture fine details with a shallow depth of field, concentrating the viewer’s eye on the subject, with pleasingly smooth bokeh and out of focus areas. A close minimum focus distance also adds the opportunity to capture supporting detail shots and close-ups as well as more abstract compositions.
The focus motor is fast and quiet making full use of Sony’s accomplished AF systems and lens barrel controls include support for DMF and AF+MF with a focus mode switch to fine tune focusing. The lens mount includes dust and moisture resistance while the front element features Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting. Even the accessories which come with the lens ooze quality with a magnetic metal lens cap, enhancing the overall ownership experience. If you shoot subjects which fall into the short telephoto remit and enjoy a compact, lightweight lens with excellent results and top build quality, this is an option which demands strong consideration.
