Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E in More Detail

Bright f/2 maximum aperture

The Sigma 50mm F2 DG DN lens features a wide f/2 maximum aperture, which enables it to create beautiful portraits with striking bokeh. With its compact size and 350g weight, this Sony mirrorless lens is ideal for travel and street photography. It is constructed in Japan, using high-quality SLD and aspherical glass elements, and makes an excellent upgrade for photography enthusiasts who want to improve the quality of their existing standard lens. The glass elements effectively minimise flare and ghosting in back-lit environments, while the Stepping Motor is compatible with AF assist functions found on compatible full-frame Sony cameras.

Compact and robust design for travel

A dust and splash-proof E mount has been fitted to help stop contamination from dust and water and the tactile knurled metal lens hood, focus ring and aperture ring improve grip. A covering between the aperture and focus ring helps finger placement when attaching and detaching the lens. A magnetic metal lens cap is included, which further improves ease of use and practicalities while out shooting. It pairs perfectly with the ultra wide angle 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary Lens that was released simultaneously, as well as a host of other options available from Sigma.

Our Verdict

The recently developed Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary for Sony E joins a growing range of Contemporary lenses for full-frame Sony shooters. The bright aperture, low weight and high-quality results make this compact prime a great choice for photography enthusiasts and professionals who prefer smaller and lighter gear without compromising on image quality.

Despite weighing just 350g, the 50mm f/2 DG DN delivers great results, with beautiful bokeh and defocus areas to separate your subject. It’s ideal for portraits, street photography and if you travel or walk around capturing general snapshots, this lens will deliver great results.

Sigma has included a Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, while the E mount is dirt and moisture sealed to protect it from the elements when shooting outdoors. Sony photographers benefit from compatibility with AF assist, while the stepping motor works admirably with high-speed AF, which is found in many Sony bodies.
