Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary Lens For Sony E Summary

Weighing in at just 230g the Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary for full frame Sony E-mount cameras is an extremely portable wide angle prime lens. It delivers excellent, highly detailed results for both video and high resolution stills thanks to the latest optical design optimised for mirrorless systems. These include 1 SLD element and 3 aspherical elements along with effective Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting. Sigma has designed this model to appeal to a broad range of users, with suitable subjects including landscape photography and environmental portraits with lovely bokeh, on to cityscapes and interiors.

Key features:

  • High performance optical design with 10 elements in 8 groups, including 1 SLD element and 3 aspherical elements
  • Stepping motor compatible with high-speed Sony autofocus systems for both video and stills
  • Aperture ring
  • Dust and splash-proof mount
  • Focus Mode Switch
  • All metal construction with high-precision, durable brass bayonet mount
  • Made in Japan craftsmanship

A near silent inner focusing stepping motor provides quick focus capability, which is compatible with Sony’s renowned AF systems. The lens itself features an all metal construction with high-precision, durable brass bayonet mount for a solid feel with durability in mind. A degree of weather resistance is afforded by a dust and splash proof mount, making this ideal in a range of outdoor conditions. The barrel includes a Focus Mode Switch and a smooth aperture ring with incredibly well built metallic solidity.

More Detail

The prime lens has been designed with the latest optics optimised for Sony mirrorless systems. This includes three high-precision, glass-moulded aspherical elements and one SLD glass as well as high refractive index glass elements. Together these make it possible to combine excellent performance with lightweight portability, housed within compact casing. In addition the smooth focus drive system has been designed around a quiet and fast stepping motor, which is also ideal for video.

Precision cut aluminium parts give the lens barrel a sleek, stylish finish and promise superb durability, improving the quality of the entire model. Added robustness also comes from the inclusion of internal metal structures. These high precision components are crafted with Sigma’s cutting-edge metalworking technology which are used across higher-end Sigma lenses and are also used in the two other models released at the same time - the 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens For Sony E and 65mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens For Sony E.

Looking to sell your Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary Lens For Sony E?

Our Verdict

Sigma is expanding its’ line-up of Sony E-mount lenses and the addition of this 24mm DG DN Contemporary model fits well within the range. It complements the similarly sized 45MM F/2.8 DG DN lens, which together make for a very compelling pair of lightweight primes covering a broad range of subjects. Results gained from the 24mm are impressively detailed regardless of subject, easily keeping up with the level of high resolution Sony cameras are capable of. Optics are well balanced delivering images with low distortion thanks to compatibility with lens-based optical correction.

Videographers can also reserve a place for this wide angle lens in their kit bags as it excels for video thanks to quiet focussing and a smooth aperture ring with sound-deadening internal grease. The entire lens feels extremely well made, despite it’s lightweight and compact size and boasts details such as a knurled metal hood and metallic magnetic lens cap. 24mm can provide a versatile focal width once it is mastered and this model from Sigma also benefits from an extremely close minimum focus distance of 10.8cm. We can envisage photographers enjoying this for not just landscapes and cityscapes, but also for wider portraits, documentary style images and all types of close-ups.
