Sigma 20mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E in More Detail

At launch the 20mm f/2 DG DN is the widest model in Sigma’s Contemporary line-up of f/2 Sony mirrorless lenses, joining the 24mm, 35mm and 65mm to deliver a series of advanced primes from ultra wide to short telephoto.

Superb Optical Performance from Contemporary line Lens

The lens construction includes 13 elements in 11 groups, with special elements in the form of 1 FLD, 1 SLD and 3 aspherical elements. These enable the 20mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary to achieve the highest level of optical performance, even when wide open, from the centre of the image to the edges.

The lens is based on the latest optical design technology found in Sigma lenses. The design harnesses elements to suppress a range of optical aberrations, resulting in clear and sharp images even in the extreme corners. By focusing on the suppression of sagittal coma flare users can train this lens on astrophotography to capture amazing shots of the moon, stars, Milky Way and other night sky subjects.

Sigma has included their Super Multi-Layer Coating (SMC) and Nano Porous Coatings (NPC) to ensure minimal flare and ghosting even when shooting into bright light sources. This makes it much easier to photograph backlit subjects suited to this ultra wide angle lens and still achieve punchy, high contrast results.

Compact With Exceptional Build Quality

An all-metal construction with precision-cut aluminium parts give the barrel a sleek, stylish finish, and provide high durability which improves the quality of the entire design. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness. Users can expect a tactile, ergonomic feel that make the lens a pleasure to use.

The cover ring between the focus ring and the aperture ring has hairline processing that is also used for the rear cylinder of the prestigious Art line, functioning as a finger-hold when attaching or detaching the lens to the durable brass bayonet mount.

Our Verdict

Photography is all about enjoying shooting your favourite subjects and this Contemporary prime option from Sigma seeks to make an extremely enjoyable lens for anyone. As the widest model in the range at the time of launch, it's suitable for a number of subjects, yet remains incredibly compact and lightweight, almost identical in size to the 24mm f/2 Contemporary. The extra focal width offers an even wider 94.5° angle of view, which is perfect for landscapes and night photography as much as it is for environmental portraits and architecture.

The combination of lightweight design and high quality optics ensures you can sling it into your camera bag, barely noticing the extra weight, and can bring it along to any of your adventures.

Sigma is blurring the differences between their top-level Art and more modest Contemporary ranges with the new design, which now features an all-metal construction with metal also used throughout the interior as well. High quality optical coatings are also used, so you can shoot heavily backlit subjects with better contrast – and even supplied accessories are noticeably high quality, adding to the ownership experience. When you combine all of these factors, there’s no denying that many photographers will be lusting after this lens as their primary ultra wide angle optic for any occasion.
