Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E in More Detail

Edge-to-edge sharpness

The Sigma 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary lens is made with high-quality SLD glass elements which render outstanding detail for landscape and architectural images in particular. A close-focus distance of 12cm with 1:3.6 magnification ratio allows for close-up style photography with distinctive large backgrounds and minimal lens aberrations.

For vloggers simply pair the lens with a compact full-frame mirrorless camera and you have a lightweight vlogging setup, suitable for POV and handheld video. The lens features Direct Manual Focus (DMF) and a focus mode switch, as well as depth-of-field control when using the dedicated aperture ring.

Compact and robust, made for travel

Despite being made with precision aluminium parts and an all-metal barrel, the Sigma 17mm f/4 lens only weighs 225g, making it perfect for travel photographers who need compact, lightweight optics which deliver high image quality. A dust and splash-proof mount helps reduce ingress of dust and water, while the tactile knurled metal lens hood, focus ring and aperture ring offer greater control through improved grip.

A magnetic metal lens cap is included and as a result of its compact design, the Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN features a 55mm filer thread, similar to other Contemporary E mount mirrorless lenses, making it easy to swap filters and reduce overall kit weight.

Looking to sell your Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony E?

Our Verdict

Sigma is busy developing a variety of options for full-frame mirrorless users across their line-up, including Contemporary lenses such as this 17mm f/4 DG DN. The ultra wide angle prime was released alongside the standard 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony, both of which are ideal for photographers who travel lightweight yet still want high-quality results.

The 17mm f/4 lens weighs just 225g despite being made with a metal lens barrel and aluminium parts along with a weather sealed E mount. The innards are equally impressive, housing a capable stepping motor which is compatible with Sony high-speed autofocus and AF assist, as well as 9 lens elements.

Results are excellent whether shooting stills or video and the ultra wide 103.7° angle of view lends itself to anything from landscapes and city shots to street photography and interiors. You can also vlog with such a wide field of view which is supported by the close 12cm minimum focus distance.

If you’re a keen photographer who enjoys sharp results with beautifully rendered details from ultra wide subjects, this lens is a brilliant choice, particularly if you intend to travel or hike to your destinations.
