Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens For Nikon Z Mount Summary
With its 24mm full-frame equivalent focal width and bright f/1.4 aperture, the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens For Nikon Z Mount brings Sigma’s high-quality imaging to APS-C (DX) mirrorless Z users for the first time.
The wide angle prime lens is designed specifically for APS-C mirrorless bodies, such as the Z50 and Z fc, but works perfectly with full-frame Nikon mirrorless cameras in crop-mode. At 420g this is the chunkiest of the three lenses released simultaneously, yet still weighs considerably less than similar options, none of which offer such a bright aperture.
An optical formula consisting of 16 elements in 13 groups ensures optical aberrations are effectively reduced, and the lens renders superb resolution wide-open and throughout the aperture range. The stepping motor delivers smooth autofocus for video shooting, while the mount features a special dust and splash-proof sealing so you can shoot during inclement weather.

Sigma 16mm F/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens For Nikon Z Mount in More Detail
High-performance Contemporary line, with the latest technologies
This lens combines a compact design and comfortable ergonomics, while prioritising outstanding image quality. Sigma designed the new 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary lens to be extremely compact, with a special focus lens group which delivers fast and smooth AF performance for videography.
Fast and quiet stepping motor technology
The stepping motor works with optics to deliver smooth autofocus for video recording and accommodates Fast Hybrid AF with face recognition on compatible cameras.
Compact with outstanding optical performance
The Sigma 16mm F/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens For Nikon Z Mount boasts inner focus technologies, while lighter lens elements in the focus lens group result in a more compact actuator. Users also enjoy outstanding stability whether shooting handheld or on a tripod. This is an unprecedented lens that combines outstanding optical performance with exceptional portability and usability.
Extraordinary image quality
An optical system with 16 elements in 13 groups, features high-tech and high-end components, including three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements, and two moulded glass aspherical elements. This effectively minimises optical aberrations and ensures outstanding resolution even when shooting wide-open. The 9-blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur in the out-of-focus areas of the image.
Two aspherical lens elements have ultra-high-precision polished surfaces reducing onion ring bokeh effect that some aspherical elements produce, whilst ensuring clear image quality across the entire frame. In addition, the structure of the optical system gently bends light to minimise sagittal coma flare and deliver optimal optical performance from the centre of the frame to the edges. The result is a smooth, round bokeh effect with ample light volume throughout the frame.
Well controlled flare and ghosting
Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help photographers produce sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. The included lens hood can also be used to block extraneous light, which can have a negative effect on image rendering.
High-precision, brass bayonet mount
A brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction, plus treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to exceptional durability of this Nikon mirrorless lens. The mount is also dust and splash-proof, due to a special sealing, making a solid choice regardless of environmental conditions.

Our Verdict
Nikon mirrorless photographers waited patiently for Sigma’s compact prime lenses to arrive for the Z system and they have been treated with the 16mm F/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. It features a bright maximum aperture, particularly for such a wide angle lens, with a 24mm full-frame equivalent focal width. This allows you to experiment with depth of field and isolate your subject, as well as providing a useful lens for astro photography and for handheld stills or video shooting.
The stepping motor is fast and quiet, and also supports both stills and video, while the lens achieves beautiful results, even when shooting wide open.Sigma employed a tried-and-tested optical formula designed for mirrorless cameras, which renders excellent image quality with low distortion and high resolving power. The crop sensor version is perfect on compact crop format cameras and works seamlessly with full-frame bodies when shooting in DX mode. Having arrived alongside the 56mm f/1.4 DC DN and 30mm f/1.4 DC DN the only dilemma is which one to get.
