Our Verdict
Over the years Sigma has positioned themselves as one of the most accomplished third party lens designers with options for most major camera brands. They are busy redeveloping previous DSLR designs from the ground up to include optics which make the most of mirrorless camera designs, with a short flange distance and lightweight structure. This culminates in the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens arriving in a trio, all optimised for Fujifilm X Mount camera users.
This brings a tried and tested formula, which is capable of high resolution results combined with algorithms that have been optimised for the Fujifilm System. The stepping motor therefore acquires and tracks subjects tenaciously and images are corrected in-camera to minimise aberrations and other artefacts.
The results are excellent, providing Fujifilm users with access to these highly accomplished lenses, of which there are plenty more in the pipeline. If you enjoy shooting wide angle subjects and benefit from a lightweight prime, the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 is an extremely compelling option. It’s versatile enough to be pointed at a range of subjects, has a close 25cm minimum focus distance and brings a bright aperture which excels in low light. Add in comprehensive weather resistance and you’re ready to go shoot in the great outdoors, whatever the conditions.
