Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for L-Mount in More Detail
Sigma has released a number of high quality L mount lenses and this ultra wide angle zoom pairs perfectly with the 28-70mm F/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for L Mount. With a combined weight of just 920g, creators can cover ultra-wide to medium telephoto focal lengths with just two fast aperture lenses. What’s more, you can add 72mm lens filters to this 16-28mm f/2.8, such as essential ND filters, polarisers and more for landscapes and videography.
Uncompromising optical performance
Outstanding optics in the 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary for L Mount ensure this an accomplished lens from Sigma, delivering superb results for both stills and video capture. Edge-to-edge sharpness is achieved through five FLD elements, whilst four aspherical lens elements reduce aberrations. Two large-diameter aspherical lens elements and the five FLD glass elements help to keep the lens light and extremely compact, while suppressing lateral and vertical chromatic aberrations that can reduce image quality in some ultra-wide zoom lens designs.
Extremely compact form-factor
Weighing just 450g and measuring 100.6mm makes for a highly compact and versatile lens, which is portable and compact enough for all-day shooting. This is ideal for landscape, wedding and travel photographers especially, as they can carry kit for long periods of time. The 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | C combines the portability of a compact zoom with high-resolution optical performance which you get from a large-aperture lens.
Bright constant aperture
This Contemporary model boasts an f/2.8 constant aperture, which gives a shallow depth-of-field and smooth out-of-focus areas, particularly with closer subjects. Bokeh is smooth and rounded thanks to the nine rounded diaphragm blades, showing plenty of subject separation with minimal distractions.
Sigma has also taken extensive measures to reduce the effects of ghosting and lens flare, caused by reflections inside the lens barrel or backlit subjects. A proprietors Super Multi-Layer Coating ensures that the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens delivers impactful, high contrast results, even in the most difficult backlit conditions. This is perfect for sunrises and sunsets when capturing stills or videos against the sun.
More freedom and enhanced usability
The Sigma 16-28mm lens has a 72mm front filter thread, so you can easily add neutral density, polarising and other lens filters, useful for landscape photographers and film-makers. An inner zoom mechanism maintains the same length throughout the entire zoom range, with almost no shift to balance. This delivers stability which is ideal when using gimbals or for run-and-gun video, hand-held vlogging and helps to maintain the lens’ small 100.6mm size.
Focusing is fast and silent thanks to a Stepping Motor, important when shooting in quiet environments such as weddings and when using an on-camera microphone for video.
Great build quality with intuitive ergonomics
Specially selected lightweight materials have been used throughout, including Thermally Stable Composite (TSC), which is a polycarbonate with a thermal contraction rate similar to that of aluminium. This, together with a high-precision, durable brass bayonet mount, allows the lens to be used even in harsh environments regardless of high and low temperatures. You can expect excellent durability, with Japanese craftsmanship coupled with Sigma’s rigorous quality control.

Our Verdict
The 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens joins a comprehensive series of options from Sigma for the L-Mount Alliance. It maintains high levels of sharpness and image quality, combined with the portability, which we’ve come to expect for compact mirrorless cameras. A versatile zoom range affords every opportunity to capture a variety of subjects, with a particular affinity for classic wide angle subjects, such as landscapes, weddings and video. Whether you shoot stills or movies you’ll appreciate the intuitive and enjoyable experience which Sigma lens designs provide, as well as the excellent results which you can achieve.
A fast Stepping Motor is virtually silent, while the bright f/2.8 aperture allows you to gather light in darker environments, handhold and capture subjects with a shallow depth of field and pleasingly soft out of focus areas. Shooting in backlit conditions is also no problem for the 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN thanks to Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, which combats ghosting and flare.
The inclusion of internal focusing and zooming mechanisms are welcome additions for videography especially, as the lens maintains a constant balance, perfect when handholding or using a stabiliser. Whichever type of content you create, snagging a bright aperture, ultra wide zoom adds new opportunities to your creative toolbox, even more so when you can achieve such professional results as you can with this lens.
