Laowa 50mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens for MFT Summary
Designed for close-up photographers, the Laowa 50mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens is a dedicated Micro Four Thirds lens with an equivalent 100mm prime focal width (full frame equivalent). The Apochromatic optical design (APO) renders accurate colours with low levels of fringing and reduces spherical aberrations for consistently high quality results. The 50mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro captures double life-size 2:1 macro, despite weighing just 240g and accepting compact 49mm lens filters.
A minimum focus distance of just 13.5cm ensures you can get extremely close, filling the frame with your subject.
Features at a glance
- 2:1 double life-size magnification
- Compact and lightweight
- CPU chip and motor for Au
- Bright f/2.8 aperture
- APO optics with 14 elements in 10 groups, including 3 Extra-Low dispersion
- Compact 49mm filter thread
Laowa has included a 7-bladed aperture which provides the opportunity to render pleasing out of focus areas and isolate the subject. As a manual focus only lens the barrel has depth of field and focus markings to assist the photographer in gaining pinpoint sharpness, often preferred over AF with close-up work. Any Panasonic Lumix or Olympus MFT camera will communicate with the lens CPU providing auto aperture control as well as full Exif data.

Our Verdict
Laowa is fast gaining a reputation for designing extremely competent, well priced and innovative lenses. The 50mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for MFT users is just such a lens, delivering double life-size macro images with great quality in a compact form. It measures just 79mm long and weighs 240g allowing you to handhold for extended periods and bring it on outings without any noticeable weight penalty. An Apochromatic optical design includes 14 elements with 3 Extra-Low dispersion elements which deliver sharp, well controlled results with accurate colour and low colour fringing. These are all enviable specs in a macro lens which is so portable and cost effective.
The fixed 50mm prime focal length is an equivalent to 100mm in full frame format, which is a classic short telephoto length well suited to macro photography. The ability to get as close as 13.5cm to your subject when you need results in spectacularly large macro subjects which fill the frame. As a manual-only focus lens it has plenty of barrel markings to assist users with obtaining pin sharp images and the CPU provides full Exif with auto aperture control. Regardless of whether you are new to macro photography or a seasoned pro this lens is sure to impress and well worth consideration to join your kit.
