Laowa 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe Lens for Canon EF Summary

The unusual looking 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe Lens from Laowa is designed for full frame Canon DSLR users, arriving as the world’s first consumer-grade probe lens. The lens has a 40cm long tubular barrel, is fully waterproof and features a built-in LED light to create a wide 84.1° Bug-Eye perspective that cannot be achieved by a conventional macro lens. The wide angle field of view and maximum f/14 aperture help capture a deep depth of field. This shows close-up subjects within their environment at up to 2:1 double life-size rather than isolated as with telephoto macros such as the 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens also for Canon EF.

Features at a glance

  • 40cm long barrel design for full frame Canon EF-mount lens
  • Unique ‘Bugs Eye’ Perspective with an 84.1º field of view
  • 2:1 double life-size macro and infinity focus
  • Fully waterproof front barrel
  • LED ring light built-in for focus assistance and video shooting
  • Designed for video and stills
  • Manual focus only

The unique probe design can reach places which a conventional macro lens cannot get to. For example you’ll be able to shoot through bushes or under rocks to capture smaller wildlife and extra close-up to the plate for food photography. At 470mm minimum focus distance and 2x magnification, subjects will be large in the frame to engage the viewer and show off previously unseen details. Image quality is extremely pleasing with a design incorporating 27 elements in 19  groups.

Looking to sell your Laowa 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe Lens for Canon EF?

Our Verdict

Laowa has a series of unique macro and specialist manual focus lenses in their range, but this 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe has to take the crown as the weirdest design. Whilst looking unusual, this wide angle macro probe is a world first, providing infinity focus with a narrow aperture to capture subjects within their environment at 2:1 magnification. You can reach both difficult to shoot subjects, which are hidden from conventional macro lens designs as well as shooting with the front of the lens fully immersed in liquids. This opens up opportunities for completely new compositions, perhaps inside a glass, under foliage or nearer a plate for food photography.

LED lights are built-in to facilitate easier manual focusing and to help light subjects when shooting video. The aperture range is from f/14-f/40 keeping more of the scene in focus and warrants the lighting as the 7-bladed aperture opening will remain small throughout. Resulting images can be as unique as they are high quality thanks to a complex optical design with 27 Elements arranged in 19 groups. This is impressive in such a lens, particularly as it weighs just 474g. This lets the user bring it along to any location and enjoy a bug-eye view of the world with extraordinary results.
