HD Pentax-D FA 70-210mm f/4 Summary
The HD Pentax-D FA 70-210mm f/4 ED SDM WR is a compact, weather sealed telephoto lens designed for full-frame or APS-C sized Pentax K-mount DSLR cameras. This lens provides photographers with a workhorse focal length zoom, which delivers edge to edge sharpness from a highly portable design weighing only 819g. In effect this is the little brother of the high quality Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 which has received rave reviews since it's release. This newer f/4 weighs in at less than half the weight and is both shorter and narrower without sacrificing image quality. The zoom range with a bonus 10mm over regular 70-200's is ideal for a host of subjects including landscape, portrait, weddings and sports.
The size of the new 70-210mm f/4 belies the advanced optical design which Ricoh Imaging have utilised. There are 20 elements arranged in 14 groups with three ED elements, two anomalous dispersion elements, together with HD coating and Pentax own SP coating on the front element. All this ensures high contrast images are captured with rich levels of detail in high resolution, whilst controlling distortion and aberrations admirably. The lens stays free of dust and dirt thanks to multi point weather sealing and the Super Protect coating.
The HD 70-210mm f/4 ED SDM WR utilises the KAF4-mount which provides electromagnetic diaphragm control that is especially noticeable during video recording with high precision exposure control. This feature works on many Pentax camera bodies including the K-1 Mk II the KP and K70.
HD Pentax-D FA 70-210mm f/4 ED SDM WR Features in Detail
Improvements over previous models from Ricoh include a closer minimum focus distance of just 95cm and a maximum magnification of 0.32x which offers more options when framing a shot. Photographers can also exploit creative options thanks to this lens' near macro capabilities. The lens uses internal focus and the lens barrel has been designed to be extension-free during AF operation, keeping the overall dimensions the same throughout operation.
HD Coating: Using the latest high-grade multi-layer coating for improved light transmittance with a reduction in flare and ghosting even in backlit conditions.
Built-in SDM: This lens incorporates a ring-type SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor) for quiet, high-speed AF operation and improved operability in outdoor shooting.
Quick-shift Focus System: instantly switch between manual and autofocus operation.
Focus range limiter: Save time with two step focus limiting.
Nine blade aperture: The nine blade rounded diaphragm produces natural looking out of focus bokeh effect, while minimising the streaking effect of point light sources.

Our Verdict
The newly announced HD Pentax-D FA 70-210mm f/4 ED SDM WR lens provides Pentax shooters with an extremely compelling telephoto zoom option. Not only is it 10mm longer than regular 70-200 lenses, it is also considerably more compact and lightweight despite the inclusion of high quality optics and constant f/4 aperture. The direct drive SDM focus motor provides quick AF and is extremely quiet and accurate. Videographers will benefit from the electromagnetic diaphragm control providing silent and smooth transitions. The nine bladed round aperture provides smooth out of focus bokeh areas isolating the subject.
The focal length of this zoom is versatile for almost any situation, providing enough reach for sports and action as well as closer wildlife photography. This length is a firm favourite amongst wedding and portrait photographers and will also appeal for close-up work. Robust weather sealing ensures outdoor photographers will benefit from being able to continue shooting even in adverse conditions with this reliable DSLR telephoto. This lens provides broad appeal whatever genre of photography the user may enjoy.
