Our Verdict
There are excellent options available to beginner and advanced amateur DSLR users. The upgraded Canon EOS 850D adds a host of improvements which position it firmly in this mix of APS-C sized bodies. It retains a compact form at 515g as well as the fully articulated LCD which has proven to be extremely popular with Youtube creators. The addition of 4K video and improved lightning quick autofocus are appropriate technology to keep this camera extremely topical. Photographers who enjoy action, sports or any fast moving subjects will benefit from 7fps as well as Dual Pixel CMOS AF points. APS-C sized sensors get photographers closer to the action and Canon's sensor provides the equivalent to 1.6x the focal length of the lens, especially appealing to wildlife enthusiasts.
With a new processor everything feels even more responsive than its' predecessor and a range of stabilisation modes for stills, video and supported lenses are all built into the body. Battery life remains impressive for either photos or stills with up to 800 shots on a single charge. The ability to pair this camera with a smartphone offers a wealth of creative possibilities and sharing is quick with built in WiFi and Bluetooth. Photographers new to the Canon ecosystem will be astonished by the amount of EF lenses available, with both new and a host of used EF-mount lens options to choose from. Seasoned users will appreciate the continued DSLR upgrades which make Canon the force it is renowned to be.
