Professional photographer Jesper Gronnemark usually photographs terrestrial sports for clients including Red Bull, CeramicSpeed, and Cannondale, but recently he went wheels-up to jump out of a (perfectly good!) plane to photograph skydivers.
Using the mighty Sony Alpha a7R II mirrorless camera and Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM zoom lens for this epic challenge, Jesper was able to get some amazing shots of the skydiving model mid-air.
After his feet were firmly back on terra firma, Jesper spoke to Sony about his experience with the a7R II.
For me a camera a tool to create my vision. My cameras need to be lightweight so it’s easy to travel with them. I carry all my gear myself with cameras, lenses, lights and stands it all ends up to be a lot of weight.
I specialize in shooting sports for commercial usage for clients as Red Bull, CeramicSpeed, Cannondale etc.
I mainly use the camera for sports under controlled environments. A shoot where the athletes can do what they do over and over again to get the perfect shot, and for portraits of athletes on location.
The auto focus is amazing. It’s always great to have good auto focus for sports photography.
Dynamic range is something every photographer should take in consideration. To be able to have so much information as there is in the files from Sony is just a pleasure to work with.
The file size, especially at the Sony α7R II, is great to have. I’m not always possible to be as close to the athletes as I want to, so to be able to crop into the images and still being able to use them for print is major key. The sharpness and quality of the G Master lenses surprised me at first - that is some mind-blowing lenses. That feeling of seeing images shot with a GM lens is hard to describe.
