OM System Updates Three MFT Lenses

OM System has refreshed its Micro Four Thirds lens lineup with three updated models, released in February 2025, with the M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II, M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f/1.8 II, and M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II.

These second-gen. lenses bring practical refinements such as improved weather sealing and enhanced optical coatings, while maintaining the compact, lightweight designs that make them popular among MFT users.

OM System 17mm f/1.8 II & 25mm f/1.8 II Lens Video Review

With the OM System OM-3 simultaneously announced, it’s perhaps no surprise that the 17mm and 25mm primes are available in kit options with this new urban-focused camera. Meanwhile, the 100-400mm zoom is a fantastic match for the wildlife-orientated OM-1 Mark II, offering super telephoto reach, upgraded Sync IS and compatibility with OM System teleconverters.

Let’s take a look at what’s new and how these lenses fit into the current lineup, in order for you to decide whether these are perfect for your content creation.

Launch Date and Prices

All three of these lenses were released on February 5, 2025, alongside the OM System OM-3, which we explore in more detail in our OM System OM-3 Camera initial review. The two fast primes are a natural fit for the film-inspired body, providing compact, lightweight, and weather-sealed options for urban storytelling.

Pricing is as follows:

  1. M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II – £479.00
  2. M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f/1.8 II – £399.00
  3. M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II – £1,299.00

Now, let’s take a closer look at the two compact primes, which provide timeless full-frame equivalent focal lengths of around 34mm and 50mm, making them ideal for a wide range of everyday subjects.

M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II for Street and Travel

The updated 17mm f/1.8 II offers a 34mm full-frame equivalent focal length, making it an excellent choice for street photography, travel, and everyday shooting. This focal length delivers a natural perspective, which allows for immersive storytelling while keeping subjects in context within the environment. Think environmental portraits of a cook in the kitchen, mechanic in the pit or revellers out on the town – all of these types of situations are perfect for the near 35mm focal width equivalent.

Key features for this generation lens

  • Weather sealing (IPX1) provides added protection against dust and moisture
  • Optics include DSA, HR, and aspherical lenses for refined results
  • ZERO coating improves contrast and reduces ghosting in backlit conditions
  • Compact, portable design at only 112g

With a lightweight, all-metal barrel and classic focal length, the updated M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 II lens is perfect for everyday storytelling through photos and video, and pairs very well with the next lens in our review.

M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f/1.8 II A Classic 50mm Equivalent Prime

The 25mm f/1.8 II delivers an equivalent full-frame 50mm focal length, closely matching the human eye’s natural field of view. This makes it an everyday choice for portraits, street and lifestyle photography, as well as documentary and snapshots.

Key features of this model include:

  • New IPX1 weather sealing makes it more resilient in outdoor conditions
  • ZERO coating enhances contrast and colour accuracy
  • Same bright f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and shallow depth of field
  • Portable design, which weighs just 156g

This lens is another great kit option for MFT creators, offering a versatile focal length in a lightweight, weather-sealed package that you can leave mounted all day.

OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II

The 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II is a versatile 200-800mm equivalent zoom, and is well-suited for bird, wildlife and sports photography. It offers an extensive long reach in a relatively compact and lightweight design, especially when compared to full-frame alternatives.

Key features

  • 7EV Steps Sync IS when paired with the OM-1 Mark II for exceptional stabilisation
  • Fluorine coating on the front element repels dust, moisture, and smudges
  • Weather sealing (IPX1) for outdoor durability
  • Compatible with MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverter reaching up to 1600mm equivalent focal length
  • Weighs 1,125g (without Tripod Adapter, Lens Cap, Lens Rear Cap and Lens Hood)

OM System’s three refreshed lenses bring practical updates to an already strong Micro Four Thirds lineup. All three now feature weather sealing, making them more durable for outdoor photography, while retaining their lightweight, compact builds, which is one of the strengths of the MFT system.

The primes are excellent choices for the OM-5 and OM-3, particularly for street and travel photography, while the second-generation 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 IS II benefits from improved stabilisation and durability, making it well-suited to wildlife and sports photography, especially when paired with the OM-1 Mark II. Notably, the upgraded 7EV Steps Sync Image Stabilisation is particularly useful for achieving sharp handheld shots, even at extreme focal lengths.
