Fujifilm X-M5 Camera Review

How much is the Fujifilm X-M5 and are there kits?

The Fujifilm X-M5 costs £799.00 for the body only, which is available in X-M5 black and X-M5 silver, while the kit version with the XC 15-45mm lens, retails for £899.00, and also comes in black or silver. This makes it one of the most affordable cameras in Fujifilm’s X-series lineup.

We’ve also got a 35mm prime lens kit (which offers an equivalent 53mm range in full-frame terms, which you can find in X-M5 with XC 35mm f/2 Lens Kit Black or X-M5 Camera with XC 35mm f/2 Lens Kit Silver, which are both priced at £899.00.

This means, that for just £100 more that the body-only you can get a lens kit in order to get creating straight away. The XC 15-45mm lens provides a versatile zoom for various types of photography and video, and the kit an excellent starting point for those upgrading from smartphones, or anyone who is just starting out on their journey.

The XC 35mm f/2 lens on the other hand can help drive your creativity by offering a fixed standard focal width, which means that you have to ‘zoom with your feet’ by moving closer and further from the subject. While some prefer a zoom, many swear by the quality which a fixed prime lens can deliver. Find out more in our guide Prime Lens vs Zoom Lens – What’s The Difference, which explores the befits of both options.

What is the M-series from Fujifilm?

There has only been one M-series camera to date, and that was the Fujifilm X-M1 from back in 2013, arriving within a year of Fujifilm’s X-series launch. It was designed as a mid-range model, with ‘M’ potentially standing for ‘movies’ or ‘mobile’ creators who focus on video. After skipping three generations, the series picks up again with the X-M5, which now includes the latest X-Processor 5.

What are the main similarities between the X-M5 and X-S20?

Both the X-M5 and X-S20 share the same 26.1MP sensor and X-Processor 5, which offer fast autofocus and excellent image quality. Both models are ideal for hybrid creators and offer 6.2K video recording. The form factor is similarly compact, with both offering dials for tactile settings adjustment and customisation with Film Simulations.

What is the autofocus like?

The Fujifilm X-M5’s autofocus (AF) features an updated algorithm and is highly effective for both photography and video. It includes advanced deep learning subject detection, which enables the camera to recognise and track a variety of subjects, such as humans, animals, birds, and certain vehicles.

The X-M5 can maintain focus and track even during fast-paced and unpredictable situations, like sports or wildlife photography.

Face/Eye AF is designed to detect and track faces and eyes, ensuring sharp focus for portrait, lifestyle and similar types of photography. This also works effectively in burst mode or when subjects are moving quickly.

Custom Zone AF allows you to define specific focus zones for more precise control, which is ideal when you want to focus on a particular part of the frame. Paired with Wide Tracking AF, the X-M5 offers comprehensive coverage, tracking subjects across the frame with greater accuracy.

Is it really better image quality than a smartphone?

The Fujifilm X-M5 does provide superior image quality compared to smartphones, which is thanks to its larger APS-C sensor and the ability to use interchangeable X mount lenses. Additionally, with RAW, HEIF, and up to 6.2K video recording, the X-M5 provides a level of detail, colour accuracy, and dynamic range that smartphones simply can't match, especially in low light.

Fujifilm’s optical lenses offer more creative control with significantly better results compared to digital zooming on smartphones. The lens ecosystem is well established with lots of options to choose between, from Fujifilm, and many other great brands like Samyang, Sigma, TTArtisan and Viltrox.

Can I vlog and livestream with the X-M5?

Absolutely! The X-M5 includes an articulating screen, plus a dedicated vlog mode with an intuitive touchscreen interface and quick-access settings. It supports 4K/60p live-streaming and can be used as a high-quality UVC webcam. These make it an ideal choice for vloggers and streamers who want to create professional-looking content without complicated setups, even when creating content in different aspect ratios, like 16:9 vertical or horizontal for different channels.

Although there’s no physical stabilisation gyro unit, the camera has enhanced digital stabilisation, with a 1.32x crop into the frame, which removes unwanted shake digitally in virtually every frame rate and video quality.

Vloggers can also utilise directional audio, which is built-into the camera body, which we explore next.

What kind of audio mics has the camera got and do I need an external mic?

The X-M5 has 3 advanced internal surround mics built-in, which are good for general vlogging and video recording. Directional audio can pick up sound from in front, behind and from both directions during interviews or a piece to camera. Fujifilm has also improved the wind filter, which reduces the effects of noise when recording outdoors in windy environments.

Despite having great audio built-in, for the best possible quality an external microphone is generally recommended. The X-M5 supports an external mic via a standard 3.5mm jack and includes the ability to monitor audio via a headphone port. This allows you to elevate your vlogs and video content with truly professional sound quality at any stage of the creative journey, which is a great option to have as you grow your audience and improve your video-making skills.

What’s connectivity like?

The Fujifilm X-M5 offers a range of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing for seamless file transfers to your smartphone via the Fujifilm Camera Remote app. It also supports UVC/UAC for direct connection to a computer for streaming and video calls.

For creators who shoot on the go, this connectivity offers the ability to instantly share images and videos. Other connections include a micro HDMI port (Type-D) to connect an external video monitor or recorder. This enables recording of 12-bit ProRes RAW or BlackMagic RAW, which is seriously impressive for a camera at this level.

Can I shoot and share?

Yes, the X-M5 makes it simple to shoot and share your work. Thanks to its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, you can transfer images directly to your smartphone or tablet for quick sharing on social media or via cloud storage. It also offers in-camera RAW processing for instant editing before sharing.

How fast can it shoot?

The Fujifilm X-M5 offers impressive shooting speeds, especially for a beginner-friendly camera, and is a great choice for fast-moving subjects and fast-paced action. It boasts continuous burst shooting at a max. 8 frames per second (fps) with the mechanical shutter, or for even faster action, the X-M5 supports up to 20 fps using the electronic shutter.

In addition, the camera features a maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000 second (electronic), allowing for excellent performance in bright conditions without overexposing shots. This high-speed capability is especially useful when shooting creative portraits at wide apertures under bright light, ensuring clear, sharp images without the need for ND filters.

These high-speed shooting options are particularly impressive for a camera at this price point, giving beginners the tools they need to capture everything from sports to wildlife and fast-paced action, while also enhancing creative flexibility. The X-M5 is well equipped to advance your photography skills and achieve new levels while impressing your friends and family!

What’s so good about Film Simulations and what do they do?

The X-M5 includes 20 Film Simulations, which are digital replications of classic Fujifilm film stocks like Velvia, Provia, and Classic Chrome. These simulations allow you to add unique colours and tones to your photos straight out of the camera, saving time in post-processing. They're perfect for creators who want to add a distinctive look to their images without the need for extensive editing.

Is the camera easy to use?

Yes, the Fujifilm X-M5 is designed with simplicity in mind. The menu system is intuitive, and the rear LCD articulating provides quick touchscreen navigation of settings. The body also includes helpful modes like Auto, Vlog, and Film Simulation, which allows creators of all skill levels to capture great content with minimal effort.

I personally love Fujifilm's tactile dials and levers, which make shooting more engaging and enjoyable compared to the ergonomics of a smartphone. That said, Fuji cameras are still very user-friendly, allowing you to easily adjust settings through the menus until you become familiar with the dials and buttons.

The Fujifilm X-M5 is a fantastic camera for creators who want to step up from smartphone content to more professional-quality photography and video. Its combination of portability, advanced features, and ease of use makes it an excellent choice for hybrid content creators, and there are limitless options for lenses, including two which launched alongside that we cover in our Fujifilm 16-55mm II and XF 500mm review.

Whether you vlog, live stream, post to TikTok or want to shoot high-quality photography, the X-M5 delivers superb results, and is ready to help you grow your skills, and your audience.
