Canon EOS RP Hands On First Look

Introducing the brand new Canon EOS RP, a brand new compact, lightweight mirrorless camera from Canon. It’s part of the RF eco system, just like the EOS R and we were lucky enough to head to Canon HQ to check it out.

IMAGE QUALITY

It’s actually very impressive how much Canon have been able to pack into such a small body. Featuring a 26.2 Megapixel, full frame sensor; the images are rich, sharp and just like the EOS R, the EOS RP is great at shooting in low light. With a maximum ISO of 40,000 (although this is extendable) it is possible to get some great low light shots.

It has the DIGIC 8 processor which means everything runs nice and fast and it also means that Canon have been able to bring the DLO in camera. It activates as soon as you take a picture and corrects optical aberrations while also helping with the loss of resolution caused by the low pass filter.

The camera can also access the lens profile information to make real time corrections in camera.

AUTO FOCUS AND VIDEO

In terms of video, you can get 4K at 24 or 25 frames per second and FullHD 1080p at up to 60 frames per second giving you some room for creative shooting.

As you’d expect from a Canon camera, it features the Dual Pixel CMOS Autofocus. Predictably, this works exceptionally well and the face detection makes things very easy.

LOOK AND FEEL

The Canon EOS RP is quite a bit smaller than cameras like the EOS R or the 6D Mark II but it still feels nice in the hands. The grip is still nice and deep and the body feels strong. Canon have removed the touch bar and gone for the more traditional dial at the top of the camera and this actually feels right for the size of this camera.

They’ve kept the flip out touch screen though, much to our joy (this is always a welcome addition) and this makes it very easy to shoot in awkward positions.

Another thing that feels similar to the EOS R is the electronic viewfinder. It’s nice and bright and very smooth making it feel not far off an optical viewfinder.

LENSES

The EOS RP balances really well with lenses like the RF 35mm f/1.8 due to the size but we were able to try it with the RF 24-105 f/4 and with the EF mount adapter. Just like the EOS R, the mount adapter works really well which is great for those of us with more than a few EF and EF-S lenses. You still get all the benefits of the EOS RP system as well so in many ways, it’s the best of both worlds.
