What is the Leica M11-D Rangefinder?

The Leica M11-D is the latest iteration of the M11, which is one of Leica’s popular M-series rangefinder cameras. The D-series introduces aesthetic and usability updates, but is based on the M11-P and standard M11 models.

Designed for purists, the M11-D removes the digital LCD screen to focus on a more traditional shooting experience, while reducing the exterior design to its bare essentials, which we explore next.

How is the M11-D design different from the regular M11?

The M11-D features an ISO dial on the rear in place of the LCD screen. The top aluminium cover plate includes an engraved Leica thread pull logo rather than a front red dot, the viewfinder is framed with dark chrome, and the body has a distinct scratch-resistant black paint finish.

Although subjective, I think these design updates look fantastic, with a sleek, stealthy black finish that’s more discreet than the regular M11 body styling. It draws less attention, helping photographers remain inconspicuous when capturing candid shots, reportage and street photography.

How much is the Leica M11-D and when was it released?

The Leica M11-D costs £8,100.00 and was released on 12 September 2024. This follows the M11-P, which arrived in October 2023 at a price of £8,000.00, and the regular M11 from January 2022, which costs £7,800.00. All three are unique, although the M11-D and M11-P both include Content Credentials (CAI).

What are the benefits to the M11-D?

With a more understated design and the removal of the rear LCD screen, this D-Series rangefinder is crafted to offer a more immersive shooting experience with fewer distractions. While focusing and composing through the rangefinder window remain the same, there’s no screen to review images or navigate menus.

The philosophy behind this is to help photographers slow down, focus on their subject, and enjoy the process of image making, without digital distractions or interruptions.

It might seem surprising, but experienced M-series photographers often say that shooting with an M-series camera can be quicker than using a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Techniques like pre-focusing to a set distance, which is similar to hyperfocal distance, and mastering rangefinder focusing make it a quick and precise process once you're familiar with the system.

Existing accessories include the Leica Visoflex 2 Electronic Viewfinder, various Leica fit flashguns such as the SF 60 Flash, and an M11 Thumb Rest Black, which enhances ergonomics.

By removing the rear LCD, the Leica M11-D takes the M11-P a step closer to a purer shooting experience. In exchange, the rear ISO dial is easy to integrate into your workflow, and many photographers appreciate the simplified, stealthy black design for discreet creativity.
