If your camera records 4K or higher quality video, we would tend to recommend the fastest memory possible. Similarly, if your camera captures high resolution images, which is generally over 21 megapixels, we would suggest getting a card which is 32GB or larger. This means you will be able to capture more images without needing to swap out your card with a spare.

SD cards are the most common memory type, compatible with virtually every camera system. These are fast secure digital devices capable of storing between 16GB and 512GB at speeds fast enough to keep up with most digital camera stills and video recording.

Micro SD are smaller and typically used in mobile phones or other mobile devices. They are generally not recommended for cameras as they require a convertor and have relatively slow write speeds.

Compact flash have been around since digital cameras began. These are larger square shaped cards typically used in DSLR bodies. They are extremely secure, however have restricted speed capacity when compared to CFast cards. Most DSLR users will however find them entirely adequate for most purposes.

XQD has been designed to supersede SD cards, with faster read and write capacity. Manufacturers are beginning to adopt this format into their slots as they grow in popularity. Check your particular model or contact us to find out if this format is compatible.

CFast are currently amongst the fastest available for any system. They will typically be used in professional camera bodies where write speed is critical for high frame rate shooting and video recording. Angelbird and other manufacturers produce options which suit high speed shooting or high quality video capture, for camcorders or BlackMagic video.

CFexpress cards from Wise are an advanced, high speed XQD variant used by certain newer bodies. These include Nikon D850 and Z mirrorless cameras.

All types of cards can be copied off either with a USB cable included with the camera or by using a dedicated card reader. These are often quicker and can be purchased with a range of interfaces to suit your computer. We often recommend storing your images on an external hard drive so that they can be backed up and will not slow down your computer. Card holders are also an excellent way to organise whilst in the studio or on travels.
