Canon have been manufacturing camera equipment since 1937 and it comes as no surprise that their DSLR lens range is extensive, with models from ultra-wide to super telephoto. These are designed for the entire range of photography genres, with quality to suit any budget. The top of the range L-series are available throughout all focal widths and denote Canon’s optimum quality, often sporting high speed USM focus motors, weather sealing and image stabilisation.
When choosing a lens, consider the primary subjects you’ll be shooting. There are some rules of thumb, but the choice is ultimately up to the photographer. For general shooting consider an all round lens, such as a 24-70mm zoom lens. To really hone skills and deliver superb quality, a prime lens may be suitable. Primes are available in most focal widths and offer the advantage of less glass elements and generally have brighter apertures. This allows images to be made in lower light and with faster shooting speeds. This excellent article on Canon's website describes the technology employed and current R&D developments of the EF lens, including shake reduction developments to allow for slower handheld shooting.
Park Cameras also stock EF compatible lenses from Sigma, Tamron, ZEISS and Tokina. All of these manufacturers produce extremely high quality options, some of which are designed with leading optics such as aspherical glass and low dispersion elements. Generally, the more special elements and the faster the aperture, the more expensive a lens will be. We always recommend getting the best quality optics for your camera. The reason for this is that photographers will upgrade their camera body periodically but do not need to upgrade their lenses when they do so.
If you are new to photography read our camera lenses explained guide, which has useful information to help choose the ideal one for your style of photography, whether portrait, landscape and anything in between.
